The Legend of Zelda’s Hyrule Has Been Recreated in VR

Virtual reality may be the way of the future for gaming, but for Nintendo, it’s a thing of the past. Over 20 years ago, Nintendo tried to release the Virtual Boy long before technology could give players a true VR experience. Now that VR is once again emerging on the consoles, Nintendo doesn’t appear to have any plans to try again. But that hasn’t stopped one fan from giving the VR treatment to one of the greatest games in the Zelda library.

Via Vrmy of Darkness, a user calling himself Megasteakman has painstakingly recreated the Hyrule overworld from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past; a SNES game that is still fondly remembered as one of the best games ever. Many of our favorite places from the game made it into the map, including Hyrule Castle and Kakariko Village. It’s a remarkable creation that really captures the feel of that world.

In a brief e-mail interview with UploadVR, VRmy of Darkness’ Melissa Lovecraft said, “Unfortunately, [we have] no plans to make the game playable due to copyright infringement (this is just for fans, and we wanted to release this as a free fun experience for VR).” However, the virtual Hyrule can be downloaded for free here, where you can also read the entire blog post about its creation.

It’s truly unfortunate that this isn’t an official release, because it would absolutely be on our wishlist. While Breath of the Wild looks enticing, it would be a dream to fully explore A Link to the Past in VR and step into Link’s virtual boots. Hopefully, Nintendo will eventually give us that opportunity in the future.
