Virgin Burn, the Comic

A year ago I got the coolest request to join our camp EVER. It was from a French cartoonist who was planning on attending her first Burn. Instead of just writing an email, she drew a multi-page illustrated comic that ended with:

Legume turned out to be fantastic. She worked at the airport, painted murals, she was a lamplighter, and participated with our camp gifting, too. Actually, you can read all about her first Burn experience in the gorgeous comic she just published. Below is an example panel, but I urge you to read the whole thing.

What a wonderful piece. As a long time burner, I can say, it doesn’t get old. Sometimes the stress of prepping the camp, and hauling everything out there, makes it fell like “work”, but once on playa, the magic begins anew. Finding people like you, who jump right in as if you’ve been here forever, and totally connect with the culture, make me believe that BM will survive. The “festival” scene of BM gets louder and more intrusive every year, but at it’s core, it’s the people who contribute to BRC (shifts, builders, artists…) that make BM special. This is the time of year when I need some inspiration to “get up and do it again” (DGS, Placement forms, Herding Cats…). It’s stuff like this that really helps me remember why I love it so much. Many Thanks.

Halcyon-If you get the artist’s consent, can you share her cartoon request to join your camp? I really enjoyed her comic, as well as her earlier one about attending a regional burn: http://www.pumpkincomics.com/burn/, and I’d like to see more of her work.

This is an amazing work! Reminded this 18-year veteran what a wondrous experience Burning Man can be… when you let it. It left me snarkless!
